Can a manager not communicate with developers?

The manager of my team and I have been having a lot of discussions on how to fix our development process. I was thinking of asking his opinion on this, but I got afraid that he would view it as me not doing my job. Does anybody know if this is a bad idea or if there is anything else I should know before I do it?

A:

Yes.
You may be establishing a trust-based relationship that will be under severe strain if the feedback isn’t mutual. Unless your manager is open to feedback, you may not get the feedback you’re hoping for.

A:

It can be hard for managers to be objective. It can be difficult for a manager to hear bad news if it is a result of a bad plan. If your manager isn’t willing to hear this, you’ll have to find another manager. You may also find that you become very frustrated if the manager isn’t willing to communicate the team’s needs to the outside world (management). If that is the case, you may want to look for a new manager as well.

A:

If he’s so blatantly bad at managing that you can’t be objective about him, then yes, you should probably look for a new manager.
If you can afford to leave, and in any case the time is right, definitely do.
