Ecuador’s oil spill recovery efforts are going full-speed ahead, as the country prepares to launch a pair of new cleanup efforts that may be at the heart of a fresh U.S. lawsuit filed this week.

Stretched across more than 33,000 acres of Pacific-sized wetlands and mangroves, the spill occurred on Feb. 10, 2014, when a pipe burst at a Chevron Corp. (CVX) oil well at the Jambelí oil field on the country’s southern coast. Ecuador says it lost up to 25 million gallons of oil, a volume only surpassed by the Exxon Mobil Corp.’s (XOM) Valdez spill and BP’s Deepwater Horizon disaster.

Ecuador is the third country to file a lawsuit seeking damages over the spill. Earlier this month, governments of Ecuador and Norway agreed to share liability in the case, with any amount of compensation to be divided equally between the two countries. If Ecuador is found responsible for the spill, which resulted in a number of deaths, an international tribunal is expected to make the final determination.

The new cleanup efforts will begin on April 1 and are expected to cost $225 million. Meanwhile, Chevron’s response team is undergoing a complete overhaul, says Mark Loveless, the oil giant’s VP of global response.
